Please try to bear with the plain white template. thinking of changing the blog skin but have not decided on the design yet!

meanwhile, enjoy this quote from one of my fav chef/tv host, anthony bourdain

"Bad food is made without pride, by cooks who have no pride, and no love. Bad food is made by chefs who are indifferent, or who are trying to be everything to everybody, who are trying to please everyone ... Bad food is fake food ... food that shows fear and lack of confidence in people`s ability to discern or to make decisions about their lives. Food that`s too safe, too pasteurized, too healthy - it`s bad! There should be some risk, like unpasteurized cheese. Food is about rot, and decay, and fermentation.as much as it is also about freshness. "

Lim Hai Sheng Cooked Food

I used to be someone that loooves black carrot cake and my usual order is "hei de cai tau kway, yao hen hei hen hei, yi dian dian la jiao.黑的菜头果,要很黑很黑,一点点辣椒。"

i am someone that loves my cai tau kway very very black and sweet. however, as i grew older, my tastebuds started to change and i prefer trying the white version instead of the black ones nowadays. i am constantly on the lookout for nice white ones. some criteria that i think the white ones must possess. first of all, the outer surface must be crispy. secondly, the kway part of the cai tau kway must not be too soft or soggy.  thirdly, the cai poh (salted radish) must not be too little as thats the only thing that adds saltiness or taste to the dish. (unlike the black ones that can use the sweet sauce). so these are some that i can think of right now.

ive tried white cai tau kway from many different places but this one stands out because it fulfills all of the criteria that i mentioned and at the same time its value for money. you cant really find $2 meals anymore but this stall sells their cai tau kway at $2 for a generous portion. plus point is that the stall owner moves really fast and you dont have to wait very long for your food.

New Garo Japanese Restaurant

Today, after watching the ball busting movie Legend of the Fist at Vivo, we were strangely still able to think about food so we decided to revisit a nice cozy japanese restaurant located near my house close to beauty world. It is not one of those stores where you walk in and every employee would turn to you and say Irashaimase! however it still does serve some decent Japanese dishes.

We were on a budget, so we decided to share some dishes (we ended up eating more then our budget allowed = P) our first selection was an oyako don set. If you are a meat lover this dish would be right up your alley. They didn't used alot of eggs to start with but there was a lot of chicken thigh to make up for it. The meat was tender and it tasted slightly salty with a sweet after taste. We agreed though that more egg would have made it taste more authentic.

Next on the menu we had Bento Set A comprising a selection of sashimi, sushi, teriyaki chicken, tempura and assorted condiments. The sashima was fresh but we felt that it was too little as there was only 2 tuna and 3 salmon slices. the tempura batter was not thin enough and not crispy enough. the teriyaki chicken tasted good as the sauce was not too overpowering and the skin was crispy. however, a little dry. the assorted sushi tasted average.

both meals were accompanied by miso soup with tofu inside. the tofu was a nice touch but overall the soup was a little too salty. we ended the meal with watermelon and orange that was included in the set. the portion size is relatively big as we were too stuffed to finish the sushi and had to pack it home. we totally underestimated the serving size and over ordered! hehe so typical of us! thats why u shld never order food when u are starving!

Xi Xiang Feng Yong Tau Foo

I normally will be more than willing to queue for yummy food but i was really tired that day so i was a little reluctant to queue for this YTF! however, the food must be really good because i see people, young and old, queuing up for more than 20 mins for a bowl of YTF. So i was sold! i queued for about 25 mins although it was only 11 plus in the morning, not yet lunch time. they have a wide variety of items for you to choose from and also a wide variety of styles to have your YTF. Cockles laksa, prawn laksa, beehoon, noodle, chee cheong fun and rice.

the fried meatball was good as the outer layer was crispy and inside packed with dense minced meat. fishball was average not wow. the other YTF staples like chilli and bittergourd with fish paste was also average tasting. The soup, on the other hand, was delicious! boiled for long hours with ikan billis and soy beans, you could taste all the goodness of it. yummm! special mention for the sweet sauce and chilli sauce used in the stall. they make their own sauces hence i was told to try eating the YTF dry. but habits die hard, i am a hardcore SOUP YTF person hehe. i did try the sauces on the side and it went very well with the YTF items.
